ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Nashville Ballet has earned its rightful place in the artistic life of Middle Tennessee and is valued as an indispensable asset to the Nashville community and the surrounding areas. Founded in 1981 as a civic dance company and becoming a professional company in 1986, Nashville Ballet has flourished into the only professional ballet company in Middle Tennessee, earning the respect of Nashville audiences and reviewers alike by making classical and contemporary ballet accessible to new and traditional audiences. The mission of Nashville Ballet is to create, perform, and promote dance and provide educational and outreach programs to enrich our community and enhance the quality of life in Nashville. Nashville Ballet entertains, educates and inspires more than 40,000 adults and children annually. Nashville Ballet performs both classical pieces and contemporary works by noted choreographers, as well as Artistic Director Paul Vasterling's own works which are known and performed both nationally and worldwide.
Guided by the high artistic standards of Artistic Director Paul Vasterling, Nashville Ballet will perform four series productions including The Legend of Lizzie Borden, Nutcracker, Bluebird Cafe at the Ballet II, and Swan Lake. Nashville Ballet often performs throughout Tennessee and Kentucky, and has toured to locations such as New Orleans and New York City, and as far away as South America. Many of the Ballet's six member artistic staff and 20 company dancers and apprentices have trained and/or performed with some of the most outstanding names in the world of dance including The Royal Ballet Company (England), Ballet Manila, Boston Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet.
In addition to its "story" ballets and other classic and contemporary works, Nashville Ballet has achieved the status of a key community resource. As early as 1996, Nashville Ballet forged valuable creative collaborations with local area singers, songwriters and choreographers, crafting a repertory that reflects the exceptional character of Middle Tennessee. Local singers and songwriters Hal Ketchum, Nanci Griffith, Guy Clark, Darrell Scott and Victor Mecyssne have each collaborated on works with the Ballet. Last season, Grammy-nominated composer Don Hart, nationally recognized costume designer Shigeru Yagi and set designer Jason Facio joined forces with Vasterling to create an all-new ballet, The Velveteen Rabbit. Renown singers/ songwriters Jonell Mosser and Gary Nicholson will work with Vasterling this year to create Bluebird Cafe at the Ballet II in February of 2007. Such collaborations have become a popular tradition, and Nashville Ballet is proud to be the forerunner of this type of collaboration in the dance and music industry.
