GPAC ANNOUNCES SEASON IX LINE UP

WHEN: July 9, 2002

WHAT: GPAC’s Season IX subscription tickets go on sale today

WHERE: Germantown Performing Arts Centre

CONTACT: (901) 757-7256 or www.GPACweb.com

The Germantown Performing Arts Centre begins series subscription ticket sales of their 2002-2003, Season IX performances on Tuesday, July 9, 2002. The line up represents a departure for the theatre uniting more established names with an array of artistic styles.

In the past, the two music series were simply labeled “Pop A” and “Pop B” and included acts from a limited genre, such as bluegrass or jazz. According to Exetive Director, Albert Pertalion, “We tried to package artists that were similar in the tools or technique they used, but that spanned the gamut of musical tastes.” Bluegrass prodigy, Nickel Creek, is grouped with Christopher Parkening, the greatest classical guitar player today, and the indefinable legend, Leo Kottke. “They all perform on acoustic instruments, but their final products couldn’t be more diverse. Hence the title, ‘Acoustic Crossroads’.”

“Pop B” was replaced by “Living Legends”. The series focuses on artists who have made significant innovations and advancements in music in their respective fields. Jazz genius Herbie Hancock, folk pioneers Kingston Trio and tribute masters Rhythm and Brass comprise this impressive series.

Another variation to GPAC’s ninth season is the replacement of the “Dance” series with the more ambiguous “Out of the Box” series. “We have presented so many excellent dance troops in the past, but we wanted to offer our patrons a broader arrangement of performing arts.” Included in the series are the breath-taking Peking Acrobats, the hilarious Capitol Steps and the whimsical Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.

Now in its third season, the IRIS Chamber Orchestra will perform eight concerts under the baton of Michael Stern. Violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman opens the GPAC season with a special fundraiser on October 5, 2002. The world premiere of the annual commission piece will feature for the first time composer and soloist in one, as Edgar Meyer debuts his Second Concerto for Double Bass.

The continual growth of the traditional Family series has given rise to a new addition to the GPAC season. As always, GPAC’s Family Series will showcase performances by the Germantown Symphony and Chorus, Classical Ballet and Morgan Woods Children’s Theater. The Rising Stars series will feature established and emerging talent from the Mid-South and includes performances by Soprano Paula Newberry, the Rhodes College Singers and MasterSingers, Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the Kiwanis’ Annual Young Artist Concert. PBJS for kids also returns this season with ten concerts throughout October to May.

To order series subscriptions, stop by GPAC at 1801 Exeter Road in Germantown any time Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., call the box office at (901) 757-7256 or fax (901) 751-7514. For more information, visit www.GPACweb.com. All major credit cards accepted.
