GYSP now in its 9th season will present a spring concert with students from the Mozart String Ensemble, Mendelssohn String Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra.  This concert is the culmination of a year long focus on contemporary music and will center around a new work by composer, Michael Chinworth.  This concert will also feature the winner of the GPAC Youth Symphony Concerto Competition, Karis Ko, who will perform Reinecke's Flute Concerto in D Major.

Karis Ko is this year’s GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition winner.  Karis, the daughter of Bo-Yoon and Jihye Ko, has been playing flute for 3 years under instructor, Mrs. Myung Kim.  She showed much potential from the beginning by placing 2nd place in Beethoven Club Young Artists Competition in both 2015 and 2016.  She was also one of the winners at Middle Tennessee State University’s Flute Festival in 2016.  In addition, she’s been selected to All West Tennessee Junior band in both years that she participated.  She also had an honor of playing at Merkin Concert Hall (Lincoln Center) in NY for winners concert for the International Grande Music Competition.

Karis is an 8th grader at Schilling Farms Middle School, and we anticipate bright future ahead for this young lady.

Michael Chinworth is a composer, performer and recording artist based in Vermont and New York. He makes work through a solo practice that can be found in concert venues or in record form and appears on stage in works of vocally-driven experimental opera and theater. His recorded material ranges the spectrum between pop and obscure experimentation and his live performances attempt a engaging synthesis of the two. He is very pleased with being given the opportunity to work with the Germantown Youth Symphony Orchestra!
