We’d like to dedicate our first episode of the Jazz Scene at GPAC to our dear friend, Mr. Chuck O’Bannon. Chuck gave the Jazz Scene at GPAC its start on his radio show, Chuck’s Place, and his unwavering dedication to preserving and fostering the legacy of jazz, along with his vast knowledge of the genre and its history, are an inspiration to our little show. Thank you, Chuck, for everything you do!

About our Host

 

Victor Sawyer is a lifelong musician and educator hailing from Memphis, TN. Through a diverse career, he has
had the distinct privilege of fusing his musical and academic identities to support artistic
excellence in the classroom and on the stage. He’s performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival,
South by Southwest, Maspalomas Soul Music Festival, and with Memphis legends such as 8Ball and
MJG, Valerie June, Steve Cropper, Wendy Moten, and many, many more. As a Teaching Artist, Victor
has implemented holistic music education for students at the world-famous Stax Music
Academy, PRIZM Ensemble, Memphis Jazz Workshop, and Memphis Music Initiative, and has
presented for the Association for Popular Music Education. Victor is a graduate of the University
of Memphis and Manhattan School of Music, and currently teaches at Rhodes College.
